Yannis Bartsokas

The Architecture of Silence

Yannis Bartsokas works with the language of architecture, reduced to what is essential: a wall, an opening, the light that falls across them. His fascination with buildings runs through the work, yet he strips away their function and detail until only pure geometric volume remains, in thresholds, ascents, voids and standing forms.

Every composition is governed by silence, emptiness and balance. Colour stays absent until it earns its place, and then it appears as a single quiet event, one flat matte field set exactly where the eye should travel. Nothing is decorative and every edge is deliberate.

Each work begins as a drawing. He sketches quickly and precisely, then either paints directly onto the canvas or develops the composition through digital studies, testing colour and form, before painting it by hand. The finished paintings are made in matte acrylic, on canvas and on wood, some with metal elements fixed to the surface. Each is a unique object. They do not show a place so much as a condition: the pause before entering, the space that surrounds us, the presence we feel but cannot see.
